Wednesday Forecast

Snow showers will continue across the region today.  The favored areas for more persistent snow will be the Northern Black Hills, NW South Dakota, and SE Montana.  Several more additional inches may pile up in these areas today while other spots see lighter amounts in general.  Highs will be a few degrees either side of 30 just about everywhere but a breezy NNW wind will keep the wind chill on the nippy side.

I suspect the snow will gradually taper off Wednesday night and it should be more or less done by noon Thursday as the system responsible for the wintry weather exits to the east.  This will allow sunnier and warmer weather to return on Friday and Saturday.

The computer models continue to hint at a cooler and perhaps unsettled Sunday.  I hope to get a clearer picture on that scenario later on today.  Stay tuned!

Tuesday Afternoon Forecast Update

Wintry weather is back!  Several inches of snow will fall across the Black Hills area between tonight and Thursday morning.  The latest computer models suggest that the heaviest snowfall will be across the Northern Black Hills and NW South Dakota while the Southern Black Hills escape the brunt of the storm.  Here is an early "guesstimate" of what kind of snow we may be looking at:

Northern Black Hills:  6" to 12"

NW South Dakota/SE Montana:  4" to 9"

Southern Black Hills:  1" to 3"

Rapid City:  2" to 5"

Gillette:  1" to 2"

Several inches of snow has already fallen in a narrow band out by the Badlands and Pine Ridge.  2" to 5" of snow is possible down there today but the snow will be much lighter tonight & tomorrow.

Breezy NW winds between 10 and 30 mph will cause some blowing & drifting and reduced visibility during the course of the snow so plan on a few travel issues.
